This isn't quite on par with the ambiguous ending of Inception, but there is certainly room for both interpretations of Reminiscence being or not being a memory. That breaks the theory that all of Reminiscence is a memory loop, although it could be argued that everything up to that point is Nick's memory loop.

Meanwhile, the very end of the movie includes a time jump showing Nick as an older man still in the machine and Watts taking care of him. This story doesn't have a happy ending, so Nick experiencing never-ending heartbreak is an odd decision on his part. It also seems somewhat strange that Nick would choose to spend the rest of his days reliving the entire Mae experience instead of just the good parts. But the answer to whether or not Reminiscence was a memory is a bit more complicated and potentially confusing.įor starters, Reminiscence's first scene isn't of Nick and Mae meeting, so that being where Nick's reminiscence journey starts doesn't entirely line up.

The movie then shows what's going on inside of Nick's reminiscence experience and his first encounter with Mae before jumping to different parts of their time together. Nick's memory begins with the same speech Hugh Jackman gives at the beginning of the film and begins with the "Lost Keys" chapter. This allows him to relive his time with Mae on a loop by cueing up a memory log titled "The Story," which begs the question: was the entirety of Reminiscence a memory? On the surface, the answer appears to be yes. The very end of Reminiscence reveals that after getting closure for Mae's death and burning Cyrus' worst memory into his head, Nick chooses to spend the rest of his life inside the reminiscence machine. Here's a complete breakdown of Reminiscence's ending and what it all means. Reminiscence's ending ultimately answers most questions but also raises some new ones based on Nick's fate. Nick learns that Mae killed herself for her part in a con that endangered a kid she ultimately helped save, with the Sylvan family and a corrupt cop, Cyrus Boothe ( Cliff Curtis), being responsible for hiring Mae. The bulk of Reminiscence follows Nick's journey to find Mae after he discovers one of her earings floating in the street outside his building. Nick discovers dark truths about Mae's past as a thief and drug addict, as well as what really brought her to his place of operation. Related: Why Reminiscence's Reviews Are So Negative Nick becomes infatuated with Mae right away and leads to the two of them having a romantic relationship. Everything goes great at first until Mae suddenly disappears, leaving Nick to search his own memories to relive the good days and hopefully find an answer to what happened to her. Nick's life is changed when the mysterious Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) comes into his building hoping to remember where she lost her keys. He now finds himself owning a business that allows people to use reminiscence while he guides them through their memories with the help of his assistant, Emily "Watts" Sanders (Thandiwe Newton). Reminiscence stars Jackman as Nick Bannister, a man who served two tours in the wars and became familiar with the technology by using it to interrogate enemies.
